So stop micro-managing the team and start maximizing the value of your product, in collaboration with users, clients and stakeholders!Ģ. All this can be managed by the team itself. Your job is to maximize the value for your product! To create those features that deliver the most value for the products' users! In order to maximize the value of your product, you don't have to manage stuff like tasks, what people do on a daily basis, what the progress of the team is in a Sprint. As a Product Owner, your job is not to manage 'resources' or 'tasks'. ![]() Act as a Product Leader, not as an 'Agile projectmanager'Ī project manager is responsible for managing scope, exceptions, 'resources' and reporting (amongst many other things of course). The focus of a Product Owner is therefore not on 'doing projects', but on delivering, maintaining and marketing the Product! He or she is the single person that is responsible and accountable for the success of the Product. This is not true! The Product Owner is really the owner of the Product. Some people think that the Product Owner is a kind of 'Agile project manager' or that the Product Owner is sort of a 'business analyst'. So, a Product Owner is a sort of Agile Product Manager. In the Scrum Framework, a few of the Product Owners' responsibilities are described, such as Product Backlog management, maximizing value and stakeholder management. Our summary of the product management activities can guide product managers working in agile companies.Okay, before we dive into the tips on Agile Product Management, let us first look into what Agile Product Management is! A Product Owner in the Scrum Framework is the single person who is responsible for the success of a Product and for maximizing the value of that Product. We found that the PMs facilitated continuous product experimentation and innovation, supported the product teams, and engaged in additional activities to achieve optimal product development. In this multiple case study, we analyzed 17 interviews with 11 product managers from four agile companies. Despite the widespread adoption of the product manager role, the attention toward it in the agile academic community has been surprisingly limited. In contrast, in large-scale agile, one can find both Product Owners and product managers who sometimes compete. In agile methods (e.g., Scrum), similar responsibilities are linked to the Product Owner (PO) role. PMs are responsible for integrating technical, design, and business perspectives when developing software products and product portfolios. The product manager (PM) role is well established in leading technological companies, such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook.
